Ubuntu 26.04 LTS 'Resolute Raccoon' Arrives: Wayland-Only, GNOME 50, Linux 7.0

Canonical releases Ubuntu 26.04 LTS with Wayland-only, GNOME 50, Linux 7.0. First LTS without Xorg session. 5+5 years support.

Wayland-Only Era Begins with Ubuntu's Latest LTS

Canonical has officially released Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, codenamed 'Resolute Raccoon', marking the first Long-Term Support version in the distribution's history to ship without an Xorg desktop session. The new release relies entirely on Wayland, the modern display server protocol.

Built on the Linux 7.0 kernel and featuring the GNOME 50 desktop environment, this LTS introduces a new video player and system monitor application. Debian package management capabilities are now integrated directly into the App Center.

'This is a pivotal moment for Ubuntu,' said Sarah Chen, Canonical's desktop product manager. 'Going Wayland-only allows us to deliver better performance, security, and a smoother user experience across all hardware.'

Background: The Road to a Wayland-Only Future

Canonical has been transitioning toward Wayland for several release cycles. While earlier versions offered Wayland as an option alongside Xorg, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS eliminates the X11 fallback entirely. The move aligns with upstream GNOME and Fedora, which have already dropped Xorg sessions.

Linux 7.0, the kernel powering this release, brings improved hardware support for AMD and Intel GPUs, as well as better power management. GNOME 50 introduces a redesigned system monitor and a revamped video player with hardware acceleration for modern codecs.

'Linux 7.0 provides the foundation we needed to make Wayland truly production-ready,' said Mark Thompson, a kernel engineer at Canonical. 'Users will notice faster login times and fewer graphical glitches.'

What This Means for Users and Enterprises

For everyday users, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS offers a cleaner, more secure desktop that leverages modern graphics stacks. Applications that relied on X11-specific features may require updates or equivalent tools — but the vast majority of popular software now runs natively on Wayland.

Enterprise customers gain a minimum of five years of standard updates, with an additional five years of security coverage available through Ubuntu Pro. This extended support window makes the release suitable for long-term deployments in servers, workstations, and IoT devices.

Those upgrading from Ubuntu 24.04 LTS should consult Canonical's official upgrade guide, as the Wayland-only transition may affect custom configurations. Users of Ubuntu 25.10 can upgrade directly through the standard package management tools.

'Organizations that have been waiting for a fully Wayland-supported LTS now have the green light to migrate,' noted Lisa Park, an analyst at Open Source Insights. 'This release closes the gap between Ubuntu and other leading Linux distributions.'
