In a forum post Wednesday, Canonical UX designer Enzo Deng announced the company has “begun … a complete redesign of the series page”, calling it the start of “the journey of modernizing the Launchpad user experience.” The update marks the first significant visual refresh for developer-facing sections in nearly a decade.
Background
Launchpad is the platform that hosts Ubuntu development, including bug tracking, code hosting, and package management. While Canonical gave the site's homepage a modest update in 2024, many internal pages used daily by developers remained frozen in a design from roughly ten years ago.
The series page specifically shows the lifecycle of Ubuntu releases, linking to source packages, milestones, and other critical data. Its outdated interface had become a pain point for contributors, slowing down common tasks like navigating release schedules.

Deng emphasized that this is just the first step. “We are starting with the series page because it is the entry point for most development activities,” he said in a follow-up comment. The redesign aims to reduce clutter and improve readability, particularly on mobile devices.
Early mockups show a cleaner layout with better use of white space and collapsible sections. No timeline has been given for when the new design will go live, but Deng said the team is working toward a release in the coming months.
What This Means
For Ubuntu contributors, the update signals that Canonical is finally investing in the developer experience after years of neglect. A faster, more intuitive Launchpad could lower the barrier for new contributors and streamline workflows for veteran maintainers.
However, the scale of the redesign is limited: only the series page is being tackled initially. Other sections, such as the bug tracker and code review interface, remain stuck in the old design—meaning the overall Launchpad experience will remain a mix of old and new for the foreseeable future.
